Ashley Furan, Head of School

Ashley Furan is the founding Head of School at HLA2. She oversees academic programming, and ensures instruction is joyful and rigorous. Additionally, she oversees curriculum implementation, staff professional development, and ensuring all constituents feel at home at HLA2.
Ashley coaches and supports the Assistant Head of School, Academic Deans, Special Education Coordinator, Dean of Culture, and Director of Operations. Ashley has been committed to the education reform movement in New York City since 2004 in both district and charter settings, serving as an America Reads/America Counts tutor at various DOE schools before joining Teach for America. Ashley taught at Explore Charter School, KIPP, Public Prep, and served as an Assistant Principal at Success Academy before moving into her role as the Founding Head of School at HLA2. She is a graduate of both New York University and Hunter College, and is an alumnus of Teach for America New York. When she’s not at school, Ashley is most likely reading, enjoying culinary delights, playing sports at Brooklyn Bridge Park, or plotting her next international adventure.
Ashley is passionate about cross-cultural communication, embracing a sense of curiosity about the world and others, and being a life-long learner. These passions make her extremely dedicated to bringing HLA2’s mission to life: to provide students with the academic and personal foundation necessary to successfully pursue advanced studies and achieve continued personal growth as ethical and informed global citizens.

Katie Passley, Assistant Head of School

Katie Passley, the Assistant Head of School, is entering her fourth year with the network, and her third year at HLA2. She spent one year at Harlem Hebrew Language Academy before coming to HLA2 as the Director of Math, and returning last year as the Assistant Head of School. Katie oversees curriculum implementation, teacher development, and scheduling. She coaches and supports third and fourth grade teachers, as well as the Literacy Specialist and Floater Teacher.
Katie comes with 11 years of experience teaching and leading in diverse schools in Tennessee and North Carolina. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from East Tennessee State University and earned a Master’s Degree and an Education Specialist Degree in Instructional Leadership from Lincoln Memorial University. At home she enjoys walks by the water with her husband, daughters, and dog. She believes that relationships between families and schools are key to students’ success in education, and she looks forward to continuing to foster these relationships at HLA2.

Kevin Mara, Dean of Culture

Kevin Mara is entering his second year as the Dean of Culture at HLA2. He has more that 18 years of experience in education, including 10 years in leadership positions across three networks. Kevin is committed to helping create a school environment where students, staff, and families feel a sense of empowerment. He has three kids of his own under 6 and as a K-4 Dean, understands how important early education is for our students especially during these extraordinary times.

Marie Lucas, Director of Operations

Marie Lucas is a dedicated and caring leader, always ready to support and equip staff in providing a high quality education and students to engage in a rich learning experience. Marie is responsible for managing the non-instructional operations of the school, including daily systems and procedures, in addition to student and family engagement.
Marie has worked in education since 2001, serving in Early Intervention and working with Title 1 and No Child Left Behind Act. In 2012, she joined a Staten Island Charter School as a member of the operations team and quickly grew a love for the Director of Operations role. She has since supported schools in the South Bronx, Harlem and Queens before joining the HLA2 team in 2018. Marie enjoys the work that comes with being the backbone and support to any successful school.
Sarit Delouya, Academic Dean of Hebrew

Sarit Delouya is the founding Academic Dean of Hebrew at HLA2. She has more than 15 years’ experience working as a Hebrew teacher and has a strong background in Hebrew curriculum and instruction with the proficiency approach for second language acquisition. Sarit earned her B.Ed at Oranim- The Academic College of Education in Kiryat Tiv’on, Israel.
Today, Sarit is working on her M.A. for teaching Hebrew as a second language in Middlebury College. Sarit worked as a homeroom teacher in Israel, was as an Instructor at Branco Weiss Institute, served as a Hebrew teacher at HLA since it was founded in 2009, and later as an Assistant Director of Hebrew Curriculum and Instruction prior her current role. She also served as a consultant at Areivim Philanthropic Group and mentored Project leaders who led summer Hebrew programs Language Camps. As a highly skilled and resourceful educator, Sarit delivers unique instruction to differentiation in the classroom to best reach each student. As a lifelong learner and committing to making a positive difference, Sarit is dedicated and passionate to educate children for a successful future and prepare them to be role models and global citizens.
Lizzie Shander, Special Education Coordinator

Lizzie Shander is excited to join HLA2 as the Special Education Coordinator, where she will coach and manage the Student Support Team. She has experience working as an ICT co-teacher, an interventionist, and Director of Learning Supports. Lizzie has a Masters in General and Literacy Education from Bank Street College of Education and is working on her credential as a school building leader. Lizzie is committed to creating learning environments where all students including those with learning differences and those learning English as a Second Language can thrive.
Valencia Chapman, Academic Dean

Valencia Chapman is thrilled to begin her 2nd year as Academic Dean of Instruction at HLA2. She has over 13 years’ experience as an educator. She oversees curriculum implementation and teacher development. Valencia also coaches and supports Kindergarten, First and Second grade teachers. Before coming to HLA2, Valencia served as a teacher, Intervention Specialist, Dean of Instruction and Assistant Principal in various schools. She is excited to continue working with the students and teachers this year. Valencia believes that all children can be successful when given the right resources. This belief drives her work to ensure students and teachers receive the necessary support to be successful. Valencia graduated from Lehman College with a B.A in Mass Communications. Realizing that her calling was education, she enrolled in St. John’s University where she earned a Master’s Degree in Education and an Advanced Certificate in School Building Leadership. When she is not at school, Valencia enjoys spending time with her family, traveling and testing out new recipes.
